Meekness Is Not Weakness

This week we will continue in our summer series on godly character traits. On Sunday we will learn the importance of gentleness.

In Colossians 3:12, Paul lists some characteristics with which we are to “clothe” ourselves. So far we’ve talked about compassion, kindness and humility. Why does gentleness make this list? Some versions of the Bible use the word “meekness”, which we often mistakenly understand as weakness or being soft. On the contrary, gentleness is power under restraint, much like the bit in the mouth of a mighty steed. It doesn’t lessen the horse’s power, but controls it. When we choose to replace a harsh word with a gentle word, it takes a lot of strength. “Let your gentleness be evident to all.” Phil. 4:5

See you in church!
