The Bible says that Jesus was “tempted in every way, just as we are — yet he did not sin.” (Hebrews 4:15) This week we will get a front seat to seeing exactly how Jesus dealt with temptation as we look at Matthew 4:1-11.
Jesus had some specific strategies for dealing with the devil. First, He didn’t avoid or run away from this time in the wilderness, but Jesus faced the devil head on. Second, He responded to every temptation with words straight from scripture instead of engaging in a debate or argument. Third, Jesus recognized the subtle way the devil tried to entice Him — with one little word: “if”.
We are also tempted to veer off the path of faith and take the exit ramp of doubt when confronted with that two-letter word. What if….? If only… If God really is…… So what if you….?
The only way to stand firm against these kind of attacks is to have an arsenal of God’s words ready to sling back. Consider memorizing this verse today! “Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7
